The Dragonstar Lance provides 'porting coordinates within Lance “range”.

Lance penetration is limited by intervening matter including atmosphere.

This constrains 'porting “depth” unless supported by a Shard.

The Shard is a hollow dodecahedron with circular hole centered on each face (4 cm face-to-face and 66 grams).

The same material as the dragonstar chamber, shards “bud” within the chamber over time.

Slow growth limits their number.

A Shard and Dragonstar Chamber become entangled on the 'port down.

This secures a Shard-to-Lance link that is unrestricted by intervening matter.

A Ground team carrying a Shard allows the Lance to image an area around the Shard.

Duncan carries a Shard on the Cyst destruction mission.

Duncan and Fleur 'port down within lance range, near the tunnel entrance.

Duncan carries the Shard, which became entangled with the Lance / chamber on the port down.

Duncan taking a shard to the underground arena lets the lance position the mirror field anywhere within 14m of the shard.

This lets the lance image around Duncan and make the retrieve 'port from deep underground.
